Summer Checklist For Your HVAC System

In Florida, we get it all. From hot to humid, storms to hurricanes, and more. Each season it’s essential to prepare your home for the weather coming its way. Before you crank up the AC, follow this summer HVAC checklist to save you time and money down the road.

1. Check And Change Your Filter

Often times, this can be forgotten about or overlooked. Your filter is a component of your AC that blocks debris and other unwanted items from circulating through your home’s system. It ensures healthy air flow and allows the unit to work more efficiently. You should check your filter every four weeks when your unit is in active use and change your filter every 2-3 months depending on:

  • The type/quality of the filter installed

  • How many pets occupy the home

  • Number of people living in the home

  • The quality of air (if pollution or construction is happening in or around the home)

If you have questions on when to change your air filter, The Service Gurus are happy to take a look and give you advice going forward.

2. Check Your Unit’s Settings

In older units, it can be easy to miss small settings that can have a substantial impact. Sometimes the thermostat can be set on “heat” instead of “cool” or the fan "on” instead of “auto.” These don't seem like that big of a deal, but if you’re trying to cool down the house without spending a fortune, they make all the difference.

3. Open Your Vents

Closed vents will restrict air flow and proper circulation through your home. Your vents were made to accommodate a specific amount of pressure. Make sure they are open in all rooms to spread the cool air from room to room.

4. Clean Around The Vents and AC Unit

Whether its dust, mold, debris, or overgrown shrubbery (if outdoors), make sure to remove the unwanted build-up to prevent it from getting sucked into the system and decrease your air quality. If you notice mold, be aware of what type of you’re dealing with as it can lead a variety of health concerns and should be taken seriously.
